In Case You Missed It

North Carolina Legislature has voted to extend the state film incentives. Production companies have been receiving a 15-25% tax break, which has increased productions and brought big budget films like Iron Man 3 to our area, but it is set to expire January 1st. When finalized, extended film incentives would maintain the momentum the local industry gained after the incentives were strengthened in 2010. Captain America 2 is one such film that is likely to take advantage of the extended incentives. Marvel has been pleased with their experience filming Iron Man 3 here and was hoping to bring their next super hero movie here also. A major deciding factor was the extension of the film incentives.

In case you missed it on our Facebook page, Manatees are being spotted in our area at an increasing rate. They usually remain near Florida where the waters are warm year-round, but when the ocean starts to warm up, they will sometimes migrate north. A few people down by the water have been surprised to look down and see a large, whiskered face looking up at them. See a full update about this at the StarNews.

Island Women Inc. is hosting a fundraiser called the Beach Bound Project to help raise money for wheelchairs that can be used on Carolina and Kure Beach. Each of the beaches currently have two wheelchairs that can be loaned out, but are currently in desperate need of repairs. Island Women Inc. hopes to replace these chairs by selling “flocks”. For a certain amount of money, you can pay to have your yard or a friend’s filled with pink flamingos. Don’t worry, the flamingos DO disappear after a while. It’s a great way to have some fun and show your support for a cause.

Wrightsville Beach was named by National Geographic as one of the World’s 20 Best Surf Towns. Read more about that in our blog post.

Coming Up

Due to tomorrow being Independence Day, here is the Wilmington 4th of July Events Schedule. Be sure to check out the traffic map for the fireworks. It shows which way traffic will be flowing so you can find the quickest exit out of downtown.

Also, if you’re looking for something to do Friday night, check out Downtown Sundown, a free concert in Riverfront Park. One of our fellow Sea Coasters, Phillip Roseberry, and his band, The Sound Down Shore, are opening for the main act, 42, The Ultimate Coldplay Experience. So, come on out and enjoy some great music!
