In the picture to the left are the heads of a Venus Fly-Trap. This rare and special carnivorous plant is native to Hampstead, NC. Hampstead is located in Pender County about 20 minutes from Wilmington on US-17. It was once just a few fishing shacks along the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, but it has since become one of the fastest growing areas in North Carolina.
The official “Seafood Capital of the Carolinas”, Hampstead is home to three seafood companies: Atlantic Seafood Co., J.H. Lea & Sons, and Natures Way. Nature conservation is a popular local interest due to a reliance on fishing and other seafood harvesting. The community celebrates its livelihood with the annual North Carolina Spot Festival.
Hampstead may be less than a half-hour from Wilmington, but it is perfect for anyone who likes a small town community. Just outside Hampstead on US-17 a weekly farmer's market is held at Poplar Grove Historic Plantation. It runs April thru December every Wednesday from 8:00am-1:00pm.
